Double distinction for Hellas Gold at the 2023 Health & Safety Awards

Topic: Awards & Recognition / Greece

People are at the core of our business – protecting the health and safety of our employees, contractors, suppliers and communities is our first priority and a cornerstone of our operating philosophy. As part of our commitment to a zero-harm workplace, we’re focused on driving an engaged, safety-first culture.

That’s why we’re proud to share that at the 2023 Health & Safety Awards in Greece, the Hellas Gold team was recognized with two new major awards, spotlighting our commitment to maintaining the highest levels of workplace health and safety.

We were recognized for our work in two categories:

Quarries and Mining: The Canary Project

The Canary Project is an innovative measurement and monitoring system for physicochemical factors in an underground mine. Developed by our health and safety department, it is intended to facilitate faster decision-making and appropriate preventive and corrective actions to ensure the health and safety of employees.

“I am proud that [Hellas Gold] believed in me and gave me the opportunity to develop the Canary Project. I am honoured to be part of an organization that prioritizes innovation and safety, and I look forward to continuing this beautiful journey by further developing this innovative application.”
— Michael Michaloudis,

Coordinator of Measurements and Occupational Risk Factor Measurement Instruments, Health & Safety Department, Hellas Gold

Facility Update and Modernization: The Underground Mine Safety System

The Underground Mine Safety System refers to a set of technological applications developed following the installation of the first underground private network with mobile technology in Greece, which contributes to the protection of human life by providing real-time critical information that is particularly useful in case of emergencies.

“The underground mine of Ellinikos Xrysos in Olympiada extends in galleries with a total length of 10 kilometres and a maximum depth of up to 300 metres below sea level, which combined with the nature of the mining work, demonstrates the need to maintain the highest possible levels of health and safety. We are particularly pleased with this award and dedicate it to the 1500 employees of our mines in Halkidiki, who daily demonstrate in practice our collective commitment to a zero-accident policy.”
— Gerasimos Monokroussos,

Corporate Communications Manager, Hellas Gold

The award ceremony took place on Thursday, June 8 at an event held at the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.

The Health & Safety Awards annually recognize companies that create and maintain safe workplaces, develop a culture of preventive health and safety among employers and employees, and can serve as role models in their business sectors.
