Mental Health Week 2025 - Unmasking mental health: It’s time to be seen

Topic: People & Culture / Corporate

This Mental Health Week, Eldorado Gold is proud to join the Canadian Mental Health Association in unmasking mental health – and we invite our teams to take part in the conversation.

Too often, people feel pressure to hide behind a “mask” – showing up with a smile, pushing through the day, and pretending everything is okay. This masking might offer temporary protection from judgment or stigma, but over time, it can become a heavy burden.

Whether it’s the fear of being seen as “less capable” or the desire to fit in, masking is all too common – especially at work. In fact, about 3 in 4 working Canadians say they wouldn’t tell their leader or coworkers about their mental health struggles.

But masking comes at a cost.

  1. It’s exhausting. Constantly suppressing emotions takes a toll on our energy and well-being.
  2. It creates disconnection. When we can’t be ourselves, relationships suffer, and we risk feeling isolated.
  3. It prevents help-seeking. When stigma is high, people are less likely to access the support they need.
  4. It impacts the workplace. Teams suffer too – with increased stress, lower morale, and greater turnover.

This year’s theme – Unmasking Mental Health – encourages us to look beyond the surface and see the whole person. Because when we lead with honesty and compassion, we create space for real connection – and real change.

So how can we support each other in unmasking?

Talk openly about mental health. Share your coping strategies, acknowledge tough days, and check in on each other. Normalize mental health as part of everyday conversation.

Encourage authenticity. Let’s create a workplace where it’s safe to show up as we are – not as who we think we “should” be. Everyone’s experience is valid.

Lead by example. Whether you're a manager or a teammate, your willingness to be vulnerable makes it easier for others to do the same. Openness builds trust and fosters psychological safety.

At Eldorado, we believe in a culture where no one has to hide. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Not Myself Today, bringing our people resources and tools to support mental health at work.

Let’s unmask together. Because the more we allow ourselves – and each other – to be seen, the stronger, more connected, and mentally healthy we all become.
