Improving Non-Mineral Waste Management on World Environment Day
At Eldorado, we carefully plan, design and build operations while mitigating our environmental impacts. We also work with host communities and governments to align our operations with acceptable standards of practice and regulations.
In recognition of World Environment Day, we’re highlighting key initiatives that address this year’s theme of ending plastic pollution. Each of our operating sites have waste management programs to properly manage, store and recycle both mineral and non-mineral waste materials that are generated through our operations.
CANADA
At Lamaque Complex in Québec, the team held a Kaizen continuous improvement workshop focused on improving non-mineral waste materials management. This initiative aimed to enhance compliance in the disposal of mineral and non-mineral waste materials generated by our operations, while also increasing management efficiency. Among the actions implemented were:
- A significant reduction in non-mineral materials sent to landfill
- The installation of two bulk windshield washer fluid dispensers to reduce plastic use
- The standardization of mineral hazardous waste bin filling using a weighing and sealing system
These concrete actions are part of a broader strategy to rethink and improve our environmental practices. Our team in Québec has also integrated responsible procurement practices and rigorous waste management protocols across our operations. Through collaboration and innovation, our team identified over 25 actionable solutions that are already making a measurable impact.
GREECE
In 2024, our team in Greece recycled over 1,000 tonnes of packaging materials, including plastic, paper, and metal — maintaining our strong performance from previous years. This is above the industry average and is a result of everyone’s commitment to improving our environmental performance.
Through reliable infrastructure, trusted partners, and a dedicated team, we’re able to make a measurable difference in our recycling efforts. All waste is handled according to legal requirements and tracked through the official registry, ensuring full compliance and transparency.
TÜRKIYE
As part of our efforts to raise awareness about plastic waste and recycling, the team at our Efemçukuru mine undertook several initiatives last year. In addition to these initiatives, our teams were able to send a significant volume of mineral and non-mineral waste materials for recycling.
In 2024, over 650,000 kg of non-mineral waste materials, including 27,000 kg of plastic waste were sent for recycling along with nearly 157,000 kg of mineral waste materials at Efemçukuru alone.
Recently, our team collaborated with a sculpture artist to create artworks using waste materials generated on site. These sculptures were initially showcased during a special exhibition day and have since been placed throughout our Efemçukuru mine for permanent display.
To support learning in the nearby communities, students from village schools were invited to site, where they attended a theatre performance focused on the theme of recycling. After the performance, students participated in workshops that repurposed recycled materials for art projects.

OUR COMMITMENT
Whether managing tailings from underground operations or plastic from everyday packaging, our approach remains the same: prioritize sustainability, ensure compliance, and engage our stakeholders in improvements to our environmental performance. From the restoration of historical waste sites to the daily choices of our workforce, every action contributes to our long-term goal of contributing to a sustainable mining industry.
