OverviewWe are well respected for our commitment to responsible and sustainable development. In each community where we operate, we work closely with local residents. We have a proven record of implementing industry best practices to minimize environmental impacts while maximizing social and economic benefits. Eldorado Gold was the first company in October 2000 to receive a final full regulatory environmental release from the Mexican Government for the reclamation activities at a gold mine. In Brazil, Turkey and China, we are supporting local communities through many social and environmental initiatives. BrazilThe São Bento Mine ceased underground operations in January 2007. We have begun the reclamation activities and are conducting our activities to guarantee compliance with the environmental regulations. São Bento has contributed to a better understanding of the ecosystem in the 630 hectares of undisturbed native forest at the mine site in Minas Geras State. In a 2003, in a study funded by the mine and conducted by an environmental consulting team, 159 plant species from 49 different families and 94 species of bird and 19 species of mammals were identified. São Bento in 2004 received an Award of Excellence for the quality of the environmental management program (7th Prêmio de Excelência da Indústria Mineral e Metalúrgica Brasileira) from the Brazilian publication Minerios & Minerales. In past decade the Mine has played an active role in the social and environmental health of the region. TurkeyOur Kisladag project is contributing to the overall wealth of the region. The mine has been operating for a year and has created 270 jobs in the area. We have undertaken numerous initiatives to enhance the well-being of the neighbouring community. These include installing a water distribution system to the surrounding villages and settlements. With its central well, underground water lines and reservoir tanks, this water distribution system is now delivering potable water to more than 1000 local residents in nine villages for the first time. We recognize the importance of sustainable development in the region - development that can thrive over the long term and address some of the social issues faced by the area's residents. Our work through the Kisladag Mine Foundation will advance sustainable social initiatives. In co-operation with the Canadian International Development Agency a business plan has been developed that identifies initiatives that meet specific sustainable development criteria, including agriculture and training, and the Foundation has begun implementing some of the initiatives. Eldorado has also funded a mobile health clinic - a vehicle fully equipped with medical supplies that travels to local communities to provide an invaluable health resource for residents.
